The Headless
Space rock · Alt metal · Shoegaze
Michigan, USA
Failure, Faith No More, Hum, Superheaven
The Headless is a space rock and alt metal band from Michigan. They make enormous rock songs built to fill stadiums, heavy and guitar-driven, layered and atmospheric under big vocal hooks. The sound harks back to the grunge era and early-aughts alt-metal, laced with over-the-top theatrical rock. Think Jim Steinman writing a single for Alice in Chains, or a Boston and Baroness crossover. For fans of Failure, Faith No More, Hum, and Superheaven.
Andy Lenox is still making music for a dead man. His dad gave him his codependence on music, bought him his first guitar, and once drove to Iowa to rescue the band when their van broke down on tour. He was Andy's biggest fan, and he died before Andy could ever play him a song by The Headless.
Andy didn't understand his spiritual dependence on making music until he quit for five years. After a stint with depression, alcohol, pestilence, psychedelics, therapy, ego death, and finally the death of his father, he decided that just continuing to play in the first place would have been a lot easier. So he got back to it, though now that his father is gone he wonders whether anyone else will even care. He casts songs into the firmament, hoping the vibrations resonate at whatever frequency his dad might still exist on.
The Headless makes enormous rock songs built to fill stadiums, then writes them in the corner of a bedroom and plays them in a basement. The sound harks back to the grunge era and early-aughts alt-metal, laced with over-the-top theatrical rock. Think Jim Steinman writing a single for Alice in Chains, or a Boston and Baroness crossover.
The Headless is mostly a traditional band with a stable core, but it collaborates widely with friends and other musicians to build out the elaborate vision behind the music. Andy Lenox sings and plays guitar, Gary Behling plays lead guitar, Jay Gauthier plays drums, and Phil Danne plays bass.
The band wants to build its catalog, its live show, and its community into something bigger than themselves. Andy wants to lift up other artists, elevate the local and regional scene, and find the other weirdos out there who might be into this kind of thing. The music and the live show punch above their weight, and all of it is a DIY effort made with craft and enthusiasm. The Headless is currently playing small clubs around the Midwest, and none of them will allow pyrotechnics, but maybe we can figure something out.
The Headless is telling a story across a series of song vignettes, and each single fits somewhere within it. A prince born into privilege is found guilty of his family's crimes. He escapes justice and travels the world looking for a way back to influence, but the journey changes him as he witnesses and endures real suffering and is struck by a spiritual revelation along the way. When justice finally comes for him at the guillotine, he accepts his judgment, saying only, “You cannot take my head, for I do not have one.”
The debut single, Another Cloth, is out now (see Listen above); lyric sheets are available on request. High-resolution press photographs and logo files are below. Photographs are full-resolution JPG; logos and symbols come in black and white, as PNG for screen and EPS vectors for print.
